While doing some Psyc. homework tonight I came across this study in my prenatal and birth portion of the book:
Human Development: a Life-Span View by Robert Kail and John Cavanaugh, p. 81
Makes me wonder what these other countries are doing that is healthier for babies… any ideas?!!

which, btw, for you birth junkies out there-this book mentions the common use of doulas, midwives and the safety of homebirths! seriously… written by two men that seem to have a confidence in the female body and encourage normalcy!

I think you also have to look at the fact that in the countries with the lowest rates (Japan, Sweden, Finland) they eat larger amounts of fish which may have a correlation to the health of the baby.
Another point is that in many other countries besides the US, women are allowed to go on their government paid maternity leave at about 7 months along. That means the last 2 months they are still paid their salary (so free from financial stress of being off) but are able to rest and nurture their bodies. I think that these countries who provide that for preggo moms and usually also a year long paid maternity leave are actually making a huge investment in their children and future of their nation. Just my opinion.
I’m sure there are lots of factors that work into it…the doula aspect is another that is much more common in some European countries.
