Thank you for writing about this. After 5 years of investigating child abuse and neglect, I gave up and went to nursing school. I seriously felt like our community simply does not care. There is a culture of neglect within all communities and the one here was so overwhelming, I could not sleep at night. I still work with Ed Necco and Associates so I can continue work with children who are in the foster care system, but the law is so protective of parents' rights, it is only the children in foster care who stand a chance.

Neglect of children is certainly not something a parent intends to do from the start. Many parents that are truly neglectful believe that all you have to do as a parent is give birth and provide a home. What is missing is the love, guidance, and everything you provide in your home to your sweet angels. I once removed kids who cried and urinated on themselves every time you tried to hug them because they had never been loved before. I also removed 4 or 5 year olds in diapers because their parents just didn't care. They were always potty-trained in a few days after removal.

I have too many stories too simply illustrate this point: We need people to care. Thank you for caring enough to say something. I encourage you and others to support Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky and Child Advocacy Center. I depended heavily upon these resources when I was a social worker.
